Iconic Shitty Birthday

Your birthday signifies your life and that you have made it through another year. Many people go all out for their birthdays. I act like mine isn't even there. I am not the only one who does this. There are many people who hate birthdays. Some dread getting older because they are lonely and have nobody to celebrate with, or even past trauma of an unforgettable birthday like I do.
This project, series was a performance piece. As I walked into my classroom, the students jumped out of the dark and yelled "Suprise"! I laughed, headed to my seat in front of my cake, and started lighting candles as a slowed-down, crippling "Happy Birthday Song" played in the background. For this being a "shitty birthday" scene, I could not keep a straight face like I had initially planned. I asked who wanted cake and thankfully all of the students lined up. I grabbed the cake with my bare hand and landed it on everyone's plates as they came in one by one. To my surprise, everyone still ate their piece of cake. For a shitty birthday, I was sure having fun.
I hope to continue expanding this project and creating more oil painting cakes with iconic phrases.
