The Price of Being a Woman

Project Type

A mixed media setup that consists of a sculptured tampon, acrylic blood on the floor with price tags, three acrylic paintings, and one oil painting.

Date

February 2023

This political project was created upon the research of overpriced, feminine hygiene products such as those used for menstrual cycles. Items that are not insured and most needed by women on a monthly basis. This is a protest, this is a sign, this is an artistic still life of what glamorized, overpriced, looked-past, products for women looks like to me. Tampons cost about $8 a box, lasting for 1 to 2 periods. Pads cost $14 a box. Diva cups cost $40, and only last for 6 months to 1 year. An IUD costs $40, and that's if you have insurance, bras cost on average $30-$300, depending on the quality. Birth control pills are free if you have insurance, but at what cost? A woman spends about $20+ per cycle for feminine products, adding up to about $18,000 over her lifetime.
